I have a car worth $4000 (australian dollars). I trying to decide what type of insurance to get. I can pay either

$572 for 3rd party fire and theft insurance with a $1000 excess

or

$1,671 for comprehensive insurance with a $1000 excess

Wow! You are either very young, have a bad track record, or own a high performance car!

I pay $210 a year for third party property, fire and theft.

My son pays $1400 for his modified, BA Turbo, full comprehensive.

You need to shop around, most will do quotes on the internet, I use AAMI for 3rd party, if your car is garaged and hard to steal, you don't need the theft and fire, that will drop the $210 back to around $130.

However, if the car is under hire purchase, you must have full comp, if the car is over 20 years old, its harder to insure.

Remember, on either policy, you will receive less than 1/2 its value if its written off, my wifes Magna was stolen, valued at $4000 when insured, by the time excess was removed, etc, she was paid out $1800.

your greenslip is for personal accident injury - ie covers the people in the other car if you have an accident. third party property insurance only covers the other vehicle - ie covers what ever you hit, but does not cover your car.

As your car is only worth $4000 I would go for third party property insurance, but shop around

you are better off with comprehensive.

here is the reason. fire and theft are pretty uncommon. but it is included on comprehensive.

also are animals; deers running into cars can cause a lot of damages. also is hail damages to a car. these 2 occur a lot. go for the comprehensive since it covers so much more, hence the higher premium.

good luck

Get as much resource as you can maybe is one option, however it could be quite time consuming, here http://www.AutoInsuranceFree.info/free-auto-insurance.htm is one resource i have had good experience.

Neither. The car is not worth the insurance payments. Just get a decent amount of liability and property damage coverage.
